Juneteenth Festival

  • Hillview Park 97 Hillview Avenue Los Altos, CA, 94022 United States (map)

Join us for our 4th Annual Juneteenth Festival!  An afternoon of art, music, food, rum punch, wine, beer, singers, speeches, dancers, vendors and more!

What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth has also been called: Jubilee Day, Freedom Day, Second Independence Day, Emancipation Day, and Cel-Liberation Day. Juneteenth traces its origins back to Galveston, Texas, where on June 19th, 1865, Union Soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed in the city with news that the Civil War had ended and the enslaved people were now free.

How is it celebrated?

There is no one way to celebrate Juneteenth.  For some, it’s eating barbecue, shooting fireworks, singing and dancing, going to special church services, gathering at a cookout and sipping on red drinks (a tradition that symbolizes perseverance and honors the blood that was shed by African Americans). For others, it’s shopping only at Black-owned businesses, sharing history, or resting at home.
